Understanding Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction is the inability to acquire or maintain
an erection of the penis stiff enough to have sex. To get and maintain an
erection, the penis must be filled with blood. In other words, the penis isn't
stiff enough to have sex. It can start in the bedroom, but it can have serious
consequences for men. This can destroy the self-esteem of men and their
partners.
Erectile dysfunction occurs in any man at any age. However,
health problems that can cause erectile dysfunction are more common with age.
Up to half of men over the age of 40 at some point suffer from erectile
dysfunction.
Understanding Erectile dysfunction in older men.
Since erections mainly involve blood vessels, it is not
surprising that the most common cause in older men is a condition that blocks
blood flow to the penis, such as atherosclerosis and diabetes. Another source
of blood vessels can be a venous defect, which can cause blood to flow out of
the penis too early. Other physical conditions, hormonal imbalances and some
surgeries can also cause erectile dysfunction.
Causes Erectile dysfunction
Erectile
dysfunction occurs when the blood flow to the penis is limited or the nerves
are damaged. Since erections mainly involve blood vessels. Another source of
blood vessels can be a venous defect, which can cause blood to flow out of the
penis too early.
Common conditions that can cause problems are:
- Neurological disorders. This reduces the sensation of the penis and causes erectile dysfunction.
- Diabetes. This disease disturbs nerve signals.
- Calcification of the veins. This condition can cause a decrease in blood flow.
- Peripheral neuropathy, spinal cord injury and surgery (eg Prostatectomy). These conditions can impair nerve function.
- Specific drugs. For example, antidepressants usually cause erectile dysfunction.
- Health problems like hypertension, heart disease, stroke and depression.
- Smoking cigarettes or marijuana drinking too much.
- Side effects of the drug.
- Emotional problems like stress and relationships.
Psychological factors
Many of the nerve signals needed for an erection come from
the brain. Emotional problems and stress can play a role in men who suddenly
develop erectile dysfunction.
Signs and symptoms
You may be surprised if you are suffering from erectile
dysfunction. Because more than half of men over the age of 40 have some
erectile dysfunction. If you do not get more than 50% of your erections; you
should consult your doctor to better understanding erectile dysfunction.
Treatment options for Erectile dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction can be treated at any age. Treating the underlying causes
of erectile dysfunction is a good start to adjusting your lifestyle, quitting
smoking, reducing stress, and more.
Drug therapy (MaleExtra ™, Viagra ™, Cialis ™, Levitra ™ and
Stendra ™) is often the first line of treatment, but many men need more. The
drug is generally followed by one or more of these treatments: a vacuum device,
a surgically implanted device (penile implant), or penile injection.
- Antihypertensive agent , for high blood pressure.
- Antihistamine. It is often used as an allergic drug.
- Antidepressant
- Sedative
- Antipsychotic drug.
